15 minute studio mini-sesions
60-90 minute studio mini-sessions
Before anything takes place consideration should be given as to where you intend to hang your portrait? If you have chosen a particular wall wear clothes or use props perhaps that will suit the colouring of the wall and room in general. And of course everybody wants to look their best on the day so here are some quick common sense tips to ensure a great outcome...
Clothing
When choosing clothing Consider the setting for the portriat shoot. Contrasting clothes are great for studio shots where a backdrop is used. However, if your shoot is taking place in a bush setting then avoid greens and browns and the same goes for lighter browns and beiges if you are having a beach shoot. Busy patterns, pastels and logo’s are also best avoided as they can distract from the subject of the portrait. Simple clothes work best! Denim jeans, khaki’s and solid colour tops or a cute dress or skirt and blouse always works for the ladies. Also try to wear clothes complimentary to your partner so you don’t clash. Bring a change of clothes if you wish and if you are having a pregnancy shoot wear loose clothing that won’t leave impressions or marks in your skin.
Hair
Hair, particularly for the ladies, is one of the most important things to prepare for a good portrait outcome. Freshly styled hair is a big advantage. Most gals don't need to be told that and for the gents a recent haircut, and freshly shaven/trimmed appearance is also a good idea.
Makeup – Skin
Makeup is of course very important for women, and most know what best suits them. However you may choose to have professional makeup applied for the shoot. Matte make-up always provides a good result as it helps eliminate shiny skin.
Newborns & Babies
Nothing beats the skin of a newborn and generally they are photographed in the flesh or minimal clothing to show their rolly bits and cuteness. Feel free to bring props and cute beany’s or whatever you like for the shoot. Special teddy’s or toys can help to create great memories.
Pregnancy
Choose clothing that will show off your bump. Sheer fabrics, a variety of clothing to swap between or some flattering lingerie also works well.
Portrait Retouching
I retouch all portraits to some degree. Portraits often need finalising with whitening of the eyes and teeth, blemish removal and generally retouching for a polished and flattering result.
